About Simon

A data scientist and software engineer with a long-standing background in machine learning and analytical systems.

Background

Simon M. J. Garrett works across machine learning, AI, data science and software engineering, with particular interest in systems that help people reason from incomplete or uncertain evidence.

His background includes a PhD in Machine Learning and sustained work on practical data and analytical problems where the difficult part is often not the algorithm in isolation, but how evidence is represented, connected, evaluated and trusted.

How I think about technology

Use AI where it is genuinely helpful. Prefer understandable systems where possible. Recognise uncertainty rather than disguising it. Combine statistical, symbolic, deterministic and human reasoning when the problem calls for more than one kind of judgement.

Good analytical systems are designed around the decisions they support, not around the novelty of the technology inside them.
